  1. I think the people who were arriving at the funeral were some of uncle Henrik's friends that are Jewish.I Think that because,Uncle Henrik just let them come in his house. The reason why I think they’re Jewish is because,Ellen & Peter were there too and they’re both Jewish. Annemarie’s first test of bravery was to lie to the Nazis & she said that her “great aunt Birte” died. She said to protect her family, Ellen, The old man, The husband, wife & the baby,& Peter from, the Nazi officers

    1. Yes I also think that some of the people at the "funeral" were peters and uncle Hinrick's friends.

    2. Liam,
I think the people that were arriving at the funeral were henriks friends that are Jewish, like you said. I think that you did a great job by naming all the people at the funeral it helps me understand it more. And great word choice.

    3. I agree that Ann Marie's first test of bravery was to lie about "great Aunt Birtie" being in the casket. Her ability to remain calm under that kind of pressure to protect not only her own friend, but also people she doesn't even know, showed that she had courage beyond what she initially thought she did.

  2. I think the people were arriving at the funeral because they might help Peter and the Mom,and girl also they are making it look like there actually was a “Great Aunt Birtie” and she actually did die. Annemarie's first test of bravery when the German soldiers came to Uncle Henrik's house was telling that her “Great Aunt Birtie” died and that they were celebrating her “life” this is a task of bravery because she is talking to a Nazi officers face to face about something that is not real.

First of all Sam, I have really enjoyed reading this book with you. It is such a good book and it has reminded me how much I enjoy reading historical fiction.

I think that the people at the "funeral" were Jews that were trying to escape Denmark to Sweden. The way that I inferred that these people are trying to escape is because Henrick handed out warming clothing to them for their journey.

I agree with you that Annemarie showed great bravery when she told the Nazi soldiers that her Great Aunt Birtie had died. I can't imagine being able to lie in such a tense situation.

It would be very hard for a young girl to have to respond to a German soldier and have to lie. It is hard for most people to lie any time but having to lie to such a aggressive acting soldier would make it much harder. It truly did require a lot of bravery.

  4. I think that the people that were arriving at the funeral were Jewish people who needed help in escaping the Nazi soldiers. I feel this way because Ellen’s parents came to the house and all of the others that were their seemed frighten and nervous. These feelings would make sense to a person that was running from the German soldiers.
Annemarie had a very real first test of bravery with the German soldiers at Uncle Henrik’s house when the soldiers directly looked at her and asked her who had died. To be a young girl and have a aggressive solider ask you a question that she knew she had to lie about required her to put on a very brave face and voice to be convincing in her lie to them. I think it is better that she knew the truth about the fake death so she was better ready to lie and be convincing about it.

  5. I think that the people that came to the funeral were family members and trying not to look suspicios. They were also there to keep warm because there were warm clothes in the coffin. Annemarie's first test of bravery was when the german soldier was asking "Who died?" And she lied in a firm voice "My great-aunt Birte". That was the first time she ever stood up to the soldiers.

  6. I think the people that were arriving at the funeral were Jewish, and having Peter and Henrik help them get to safety in Sweden. They weren't actually there for Aunt Brites death. (Because there is actually no Aunt Brite.) They were coming for help, not a funeral. And it was good that Mrs. Johansen could be brave and tell the Nazi soldiers that it was a funeral not them helping the Jews. Annemarie had to act brave, calm and casual so the soldiers wouldn't get suspicious. Annemarie had to be brave when the soldiers asked her questions about the casket. Annemarie's first test of bravery at Henriks house was when the soldiers asked her questions.

I agree that Annemarie and her mother both showed a lot of bravery by remaining calm and casual on the outside when,on the inside, they must have been terrified.

  8. The people who were at the funeral were jews because there was no Great Aunt Birte and so they could get to Switzerland so they were safe. The first test of bravery when the Nazi came to Uncle Henrik`s house was when the Nazi asked “Who`s in there?” then Annemarie had to lie and say “My Great aunt Birte” so they wouldn't draw any suspicion.

  9. The people who were arriving at the “funeral” were Jewish people. How I know that is why else would they be taking them to a boat to Sweden where the war is not happening and the Rosens are Jewish so that gives you a big hint. The first test of bravery that Annemarie had to take when the German soldiers came to Uncle Henrik’s house is she had to lie to the German soldier that her “Great Aunt Birte” died. Because, well A because she had no idea what was in there and she didn’t want to get anyone in trouble.

  10. The people who were arriving at the funeral were Jewish people. They were being helped by AnneMarie and her family. The funeral was a cover up to get them all together and safely as possible to the fishing boat . The fishing boat will take them to Sweden where there is no war and they will be safe. The first test of AnneMarie’s bravery was to tell a lie. She had to lie about “Great Aunt Birte” in order to protect her family and protect those they were trying to help.
