Question 1:

What advice does Mrs. Rosen give the girls about playing outside? Why? What does his advice mean?

9 comments:

  1. The advice Mrs.Rosen gives the girls about playing outside is, “ They will remember your faces. It is good to be one of the crowd. Be one of many. But they should never have a reason to remember you.” I think she said that because Ellen is Jewish so she doesn’t want the girls or the rest of the Johnsons or the Rosens to get hurt. This advice means that you should be one of many but should never be remembered badly or in this case as one of the Jews when the Nazis are around.

    1. Talia, I agree with you! I like how you pulled out actual evidence out of the text. I also liked that you put in the specific names like “the Rosens and the Johnsons!” I think you did the same thing I did, saying that Mrs. Rosen wants the girls not to get hurt or in trouble by the soldiers. And I also agree that she also doesn't want her family or the Johnsons to get hurt.

  2. What advice Mrs. Rosen gives the girls about playing outside is that she thinks the girls should stay off the corners and walk a different way home. She says that because she doesn't want the girls to run into the same soldiers again because she might think the soldiers might injure the girls or get them into trouble. What she is trying to tell them is that it is not good for the soldiers to recognize anyone ever. Maybe if the are recognized they might become a target for the soldiers. In my opinion this would be a very scary situation to be in. I would not want a soldier to recognize me, my friends, or my family either.

Leah, I like how you worded your response and it is easy to understand. I would have never thought of writing it the way you did.

  3. The reason why Mrs. Rosen gave the girls advice was to give them a heads up. The advice she gave the girls was to be careful of the soldiers because they might recognize them and send them to concentration camps. The advice she gave them meant to be careful, cautious, and alert of soldiers.

I really think that you picked the best word in describing Mrs. Rosen advice when you said cautious. I agree with your statement and feel that Mrs. Rosen simply wanted to girls to be aware of who noticed them and who to avoid.

  4. Mrs. Rosen gave the girls very serious advice about the ways in which they should walk home. She wanted them to no longer go the same way home for their own safety. She must have been worried that since the girls had such a horrible encounter with the soldiers that they would become the target of these soldiers in the future. She wanted the girls to blend in with all the other people on the streets instead of standing out to the soldiers. If they went another way home this would be more realistic. Mothers want to protect their children from harm and that is exactly what Mrs. Rosen was trying to do with her advice.

  5. The advice that Mrs. Rosen gave to the girls is they should go a different route to school because the soldiers will remember their faces and it`s important to be part of the crowd. You want them to forget your face. This is important because you don’t want the soldiers taking you away to a camp. Advice means to give some tips ,opinion , and offer on specific thing. She gave them the advice to protect them from the soldiers and what they might do.
